Phulkari

Phulkari meaning "flower work" is a traditional embroidery art from Punjab, India. Bold geometric and floral patterns are created using vibrant silk threads on fabric. The embroidery is characterised by dense, colourful thread work that covers large areas of the fabric surface. Phulkari is an important part of Punjabi cultural heritage and is traditionally associated with weddings and festive celebrations.

A Phulkari dupatta is a long scarf or stole featuring traditional Phulkari 
embroidery. It is typically made from chiffon, georgette, or cotton fabric and decorated with vibrant geometric thread work. Phulkari dupattas are worn with salwar kameez, lehengas, and anarkali suits for festive and wedding occasions.

Phulkari is distinct for its bold geometric patterns, dense silk thread work, and vibrant colour combinations. Unlike Kashmiri Aari embroidery which features curved floral motifs, Phulkari uses straight geometric patterns — typically diamonds, chevrons, and cross-stitch formations. The embroidery is worked from the reverse side of the fabric.

Phulkari dupattas are perfect for weddings, engagement ceremonies, Lohri celebrations, Baisakhi festivities, haldi and mehendi functions, and all Punjabi cultural celebrations. They also work beautifully for Diwali, Navratri, and other Indian festivals.

A Phulkari dupatta can be draped over one shoulder with a salwar kameez, layered over a lehenga, or worn as a stole with western outfits for a fusion look. For bridal occasions, it is traditionally pinned to the hair and draped over both shoulders symmetrically.

Hand wash gently in cold water with a mild detergent. Do not wring or scrub the embroidered areas. Lay flat to dry in shade. Iron on low heat on the reverse side to protect the silk threads. Dry clean is recommended for heavily embroidered bridal dupattas.
