Kani Shawl

A Kani shawl online is a handwoven textile made using a technique originating in the Kashmir Valley. Small wooden bobbins called "kanis" are used to weave individual colour threads directly into the fabric on a handloom. Unlike embroidery, where patterns are added on top of a woven base, Kani patterns are an integral part of the weave itself. The process is slow and painstaking — a complex Kani shawl can take weeks or months to complete — which is why it is considered one of the highest forms of textile craft in India.

Both Kani and Jamawar are woven shawl traditions with similar tapestry-style visual patterns, but they differ in origin and method. Kani weave is specific to the Kashmir Valley and is done entirely by hand using wooden bobbins. Jamawar shawls can be power-loom or handloom woven and feature brocade-style motifs that are often denser and more symmetrical. Kani shawls are generally considered more labour-intensive and are priced higher for comparable quality.

An authentic handwoven Kani shawl will have thread tails or small loops on the reverse side where each colour bobbin was individually woven in — this is called the "kani back" and is the clearest sign of genuine hand-weaving. The patterns should be slightly irregular under close inspection, unlike machine-woven pieces which are perfectly uniform. The fabric will also feel denser and heavier than a printed or embroidered wool shawl of the same size.

This adds a lustrous, festive quality to the piece and makes it particularly popular for bridal trousseaux and wedding gifting.

Dry cleaning is strongly recommended for Kani shawls to preserve the woven structure and any Zari thread. If hand washing, use cold water and a very mild wool-safe detergent — never scrub or wring. Lay flat on a clean towel to dry in shade. For storage, fold (do not roll or hang) and keep in a muslin cloth bag with a cedar block or neem leaves to protect against moth damage. Avoid plastic bags, which trap moisture.
